In debatably the most hectic offseason of all time, the Chargers have been the biggest winners

Why was their offseason the best in the NFL

Coming off a year where the Chargers missed the playoffs, they were some of the biggest spenders this offseason. They started off on March 8th by re-signing Mike Williams, giving him a three-year deal which can land him as much as $60 million. At the time of the signing that contract made him the third highest paid receiver in the league. Then on March 10th they traded a 2nd and 6th rounder to the Bears for star pass rusher, Khalil Mack. Although Mack is surely out of his prime, even 70% of Khalil Mack is still a good player and surely better than a 2nd and 6th round pick. Later on March 14th they had arguably their best day of the offseason in which they acquired star corner J.C. Jackson as well as Sebastian Joseph-Day. The Chargers ended up making J.C. Jackson one of the highest paid corners, giving him a five-year deal where he can make as much as $82.5 million. They also gave Sebastian Joseph-Day a three-year deal where he can make as much as $24 million. The last key move they made was giving Gerald Evrett a two-year deal which can earn him a max of $13.5 million. Taking all of this in the Bolts have been the biggest spenders but also the best spenders this offseason.

Why now is the time for them to spend all this money

With Herbert still on his rookie deal the best time to spend money is now. Considering he is a top five quarterback they will end up giving him a massive contract in the next year or two. After they give him that contract they won't be in a position to sign other star players the way they did this year. In the last 10 years there hasn't been a Super Bowl winning team that also had a top five paid quarterback. Despite the Chargers missing the playoffs, their offense was the fourth highest scoring offense in the entire league. Their window for winning is now. With their offense being a top performing offense, all they needed was to build up their defense. That's exactly what they did. While they did already have star defensive players in Joey Bosa, Derwin James, and Asonte Samuel, they needed to fill out their weaker spots. That's exactly what they did, while they struggled with both pass rush and secondary they fixed both. As far as upgrading pass rush everyone knows how good Khalil Mack could be but the most underrated signing is Sebastian Joseph-Day. Although he received little recognition he was one of the most important players for the Ram's dominant defense last year. They also really improved their secondary by signing one of the best corners in the league in J.C. Jackson. By adding these players they really turned their mediocre defense into an elite unit. Now that they have a top five offense and a great defense they will have high expectations and are in line for big things this season.
