2023 NFL Thursday Night Opener Recap

The wait is over and football is back! While the wait was long this game did not live up to the hype as the Bills manhandled the Super Bowl champs.

For the first game of the season, we saw the reigning Super Bowl champs face off against Josh Allen and the Bills. From the jump, the Bills just looked like the way more polished team and the Rams looked like a prime example of a Super Bowl hangover. Stafford (2021 NFL leader in interceptions) threw three picks in this messy game. Likely the biggest issue for the Rams had to be the performance of their offensive line. Even though the Bills did not blitz once they still managed to get tons of pressure on Stafford which included sacking him 7 times. This pressure was one of the main reasons for the sloppy performance from Stafford and because of this their offense was terrible only scoring 10 points. From this game, the only positive takeaway for the Rams is that Cooper Kupp's '21 season was clearly not a fluke as he managed to haul in 13 receptions for 128 yards and a touchdown. While we should not overreact over one game I am still low on the Rams this season and I was even before this game. If the Rams don't clean stuff up in the next few weeks they will need to acquire another receiver because ever since Odell went down in the Super Bowl their offense has looked lost, and it doesn't look like it's getting much better. For the Bills on the other hand they played incredibly. As mentioned earlier they managed to get great pressure without ever rushing more than 5. Due to them being able to have extra players in coverage at all times they managed to also have 3 interceptions. The offense was also electric for the Bills as they managed to put up 31 points, with Allen throwing for 297 yards and 3 touchdowns with two interceptions (which came at the fault of his receivers). Allen also rushed for 57 yards and added a touchdown from the ground. The Bills receiving group looked great with Stefon Diggs leading the pack with 8 receptions for 122 yards and a touchdown. As a whole, this game was mainly green flags for the Bills and I expect them to keep this up and we should all expect to see them pretty deep in this year's NFL playoffs.
